Last Friday, my mom and I made an appointment to visit Hannah Blount in her studio, located in the SoWa Artists Guild. I had seen one or two pieces of Hannah's jewelry in Nantucket before, but never knew the true breadth and beauty of her work.
Hannah grew up in Nantucket, where she was inspired by the juxtaposition of the rough weathered fishing gear and the beautiful natural surroundings of the island. Her parents were a fisherman and a seamstress, instilling the value of working with your hands and hard work throughout her childhood. She graduated from Umass Dartmouth in 2008 with a degree in Jewels/Metals before continuing on to create Hannah Blount Jewelry.
Hannah's studio is quite possibly the coolest place ever. It is filled with interesting vignettes and motifs. The interior designer in me was going crazy while the jewelry lover in me was also freaking out...safe to say I was a little distracted. She loves certain symbols that appear throughout her studio space and in her jewelry, such as hands, faces, fish, eggs and beetles. I loved that I was able to walk into her studio, look at her jewelry, and feel that both completely encapsulated her style and what she's all about. She has a lovely aesthetic that is raw and natural, and really enhances the pure beauty of her materials (she uses a lot of natural stones and pearls).
Don't miss the pictures from our visit below.....(oh yea, and go buy her beautiful jewelry!)
