Today I'm here to tell you about a very special place: the Green Spot. I regret to say I didn't discover this absolute gem until late in my junior year at Colby. But maybe it is for the best, since I undoubtedly would have spent all of my pennies on fresh produce, salads and baked goods from the Green spot. So my wallet may have been better off because of this late discovery but my stomach and my soul wishes they had benefited from these goods a long long time ago.
The Green Spot is owned by sisters, Tanya and Brenda Athanus. When we walked through the doors, we immediately received big and welcoming hugs from these two great ladies. Their shop is located on Kennedy Memorial Drive, a short drive from Colby College. You can't really miss it as it is decked out in the most cheery and incredible yellow and green.
Tanya and Brenda stock this place with the best of the best. They have everything you could ever need/want: local fruits and vegetables, cheeses, fish, wines, gourmet sauces, fresh lobsters, homemade ice cream, candy, Maine honey, etc. Everything that comes through their doors is hand picked by these two talented ladies and it all seems to have a story behind it. The real pièce de résistance, however, is the counter located in the back of the shop. Here they whip up delicious salads daily. Some of my favorites include their famous chicken curry salad, seaweed and sesame salad, fresh tomato and mozzarella salad, black bean and corn salad...the list goes on. I'm not a lobster gal but people rave about how fresh and delicious their lobster rolls are-- so if that's your thing definitely ask for one. They also often have homemade meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, and other creations made daily.
We went about two hours out of our way to pick up a little picnic to take with us to the coast. Of course, I was devastated to see the baguettes had just sold out, until Brenda informed me that a fresh batch would be coming out of the oven in five minutes. This has happened before let me tell you...but they always seem to be cooking up a fresh batch (well worth the wait). I took a few snaps so you could see all of the goodness that's hiding in this bright roadside oasis...
If you're ever in the area, I can't stress enough to stop in and see Tanya and Brenda. They are so warm and welcoming and really know their stuff. If you have a cousin, sibling, nephew/niece, friend or anyone who is headed up to Colby for a visit (or goes to Colby), make sure you take them here for some picnic food!
