Remember when I posted about my coworker's aunt, formally known as great Aunt Rae? I was fortunate to meet Aunt Rae earlier this year, when she stopped by for coffee and dished out some serious wisdom. At 97 years old, she is as spunky and upbeat as ever, sharing many similarities (specifically her appearance), with the great Iris Apfel.
Iris, the movie, was released this past spring and has been on my must-watch list for quite some time. For some reason every time I planned to go see it in theaters this summer, something came up. Last weekend, I was home and finally found myself sitting by the fire, looking for something to watch.
I was so happy I took the time to watch. Iris is truly an incredible, wise, funny and smart lady. It was so interesting watching her in her element, bargain shopping and styling outfits. She has no fear and believes in having fun and taking risks with your style choices. I also loved all of the interactions between her and her husband, Carl, who is equally as dapper and hilarious.
Iris' dry humor and no-apologies-attitude towards life is fantastic. She is who she is and she accepts it, works with it, and embraces it. I could compile a book full of quotes by Iris because everything that comes out of her mouth is pure gold, but I'll spare you the complete list. Instead, check out a few of my favorites quotes as well as the movie trailer below.
"When you don't dress like everyone else you don't have to think like everyone else."
"I'm not pretty, and I'll never be pretty but it doesn't matter. I have something much better. I have style."
"Life is gray and dull; you might as well have a little fun when you dress."
"More is more and less is a bore."
"If you hang around long enough everything comes back."
"Color can raise the dead."
"I don't have any rules, because I'd only be breaking them."
"There is really no substitute for experience. You must have experience and be open to experience- that helps. That helps a lot. Most importantly, you have to be yourself, be who you are and take time to be open and honest with yourself. That is what it's all about. If you don't know yourself, you'll never have great style. You'll never really live. To me, the worst fashion faux pas is looking in the mirror, and not seeing yourself."
"I don't see anything so wrong with a wrinkle. It's kind of a badge of courage."
"I don't expect to find inspiration. It just sort of comes. Sometimes you step on a bug and get inspired."
"To lead the good life in New York, the two most important things for a woman are a chauffeur and a fur-lined raincoat."
"Fashion you can buy but style you possess."
"If your hair is done properly and you're wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything."
"You have to try it. You only have one trip. You've got to remember that."
