Last night we had the pleasure of attending the Boston Pops on Jetties Beach in Nantucket. It was easily one of my favorite nights of the summer so far. I've attended the Boston Pops in Boston almost every year since I was young, but Nantucket is a first.
We arrived at 4:30, as the show was starting at 6:45. You would think this would leave a generous amount of time to get a good spot, miss the line, etc -- well apparently it does not. People started waiting in line at 7:30am to ensure the best spots on the beach. Despite our naive approach, we still managed to get there ahead of many people and stake out a good spot by the water.
We lugged our coolers of cold drinks and fried chicken down to the water, beach chairs in hand and set up camp. We started with a cheese plate and some libations. The weather could not have been more perfect. As the sun started to dip, we broke out our loot and started in on our feast.
As the music began, we indulged in corn, sweet potato and black bean salad, quinoa salad, greek salad, and fried chicken from Bartlett's Farm.
All of the boats pulled up close to shore to share in the festivities. Over 8,000 people showed up for the show, the seats getting dangerously close to the rising tide. Regardless, everyone was in the best of spirits, soakin' up the sun with good food, drinks and company.
As the sun set, the music turned from the roaring 20s, to the main event of the night: Abba! An awesome tribute band all the way from Sweden took the stage and played all of Abba's best hits: Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Fernando etc. Everyone was up and dancing under the beautiful super moon.
The grande finale of the night was the fireworks. The planning committee upped the budget and doubled the amount of fireworks this year which made for an awe inspiring display. With the music playing in the background, the fireworks lit up the sky right next to the moon. They just kept going for what seemed like 45 minutes, ending with a huge finale.
Tips for next year:
- Arrive early (or send someone ahead to claim a spot) before the gates open (@4:30).
- Take water.
- Keep in mind everything you bring in you have to bring out.
- Can't park anywhere in the area -- either walk, drop off, or park in town.
- Have fun!
